VFD
A viscous damper is a kind of oil cylinder structure filled with damping medium. It drives the flow of the internal medium through the reciprocating motion of the piston to produce a damping effect, and then converts kinetic energy into thermal energy as an energy-consuming and shock-absorbing device. Viscous dampers are mainly applicable to bridges and high-rise buildings in areas where earthquakes and typhoons occur frequently.
Working principle
Viscous dampers are mainly composed of pistons, cylinders, end covers, damping media and connecting bodies. The piston divides the cylinder into two parts. During the reciprocating motion of the piston within the cylinder, the damping medium flows rapidly in the two separated chambers. Intense friction occurs among the molecules of the medium and between the medium and the piston. When the medium passes through the piston holes, a huge throttling damping is generated. The resultant force of these effects is called the damping force. The damping force generated during the flow converts the seismic kinetic energy into heat and dissipates it through the reciprocating motion of the piston in the viscous liquid, gradually reducing the speed of the piston's movement and achieving the purpose of damping and energy dissipation. Since the viscous damper is a velocity-dependent damper without stiffness, it will not change the inherent dynamic characteristics of the structure when working. It only provides additional damping for the structure. The damping force-displacement hysteretic curve is full and approximately rectangular, endowing it with stable dynamic characteristics and a strong energy dissipation capacity.
