Tuned mass dampers are composed of mass blocks, springs and damping systems. The purpose of installing tuned mass dampers into a structure is to reduce the vibration amplitude of the basic structure under the action of external forces and improve the comfort level during use. In this case, its vibration frequency is generally adjusted to be close to the frequency of the main structure to change the resonance characteristics of the structure, so as to achieve the effect of shock absorption.

Tuned mass dampers belong to structural passive control vibration reduction devices.
The passive tuned vibration reduction control system consists of a main structure and a substructure attached to the main structure. The attached substructure has mass, stiffness and damping, so the natural vibration frequency of the substructure can be adjusted to make it as close as possible to the fundamental frequency or excitation frequency of the main structure. In this way, when the main structure is excited and vibrates, the substructure will generate an inertial force acting on the main structure in the direction opposite to that of the vibration of the main structure, causing the response of the main structure to decay and be controlled.
