EN 15129:2009 – Large‑deformation Requirements for Elastomeric Seismic Isolators

Abstract: EN 15129:2009 is the European harmonised standard for anti‑seismic devices, covering design, materials, type‑testing and factory production control (FPC) for building‑ and‑bridge elastomeric seismic isolators. Large‑deformation performance is critical for CE‑marked rubber bearings, verifying safety under combined vertical‑horizontal seismic loads.

Anti-overturning Elastomeric Seismic Isolation Bearings

During earthquakes, laminated rubber isolators experience extreme shear displacement. Uncontrolled large deformation may cause buckling, steel‑rubber delamination, rubber tearing and edge cavitation. EN 15129 defines both design limits and mandatory type‑test requirements in Clause 8.2 for elastic isolators.

Design requirements (Clause 8.2.3)
Maximum seismic shear strain news-37-18 news-37-18 shall not exceed 250 % (2.5). Total shear strain accounts for compression, earthquake displacement and rotation amplified by local factor news-15-16 news-15-16. Compression‑shear buckling check is required: maximum seismic vertical load news-47-18 news-47-18 < news-41-16 news-41-16. Local edge tensile stress is limited to 2G; anti‑tension details are required if exceeded to prevent rubber cavitation.

Mandatory large‑deformation type tests (Clause 8.2.1 / 8.2.4)

These apply for type approval only, not routine factory production tests.

1. Horizontal displacement‑capacity test ([8.2.1.2](8.2.1.2).7)
Under maximum / minimum seismic vertical load, displace the isolator to news-46-16 news-46-16 (news-58-16 news-58-16). Hold target displacement statically for 2 minutes under constant vertical load. Pass criteria: no debonding, delamination, tearing or buckling; surface crack width ≤ 2 mm. The 2‑minute static hold is a key distinction from many national standards.

2. Shear‑strain dependency test ([8.2.1.2](8.2.1.2).2)
Multi‑amplitude cyclic shear testing. Where design shear strain > 100 %, add extra high‑strain test points (150 %, 200 %, 250 %). Take data from the 3rd cycle. Stiffness and damping shall remain within ± 20 % of design values.

3. Repeated‑cycling correlation test ([8.2.1.2](8.2.1.2).5)
Minimum 10 full cycles at 100 % shear strain. Check inter‑cycle stiffness‑and‑damping stability; no cracking or internal delamination after loading.

All hysteresis test data shall be calculated per Annex G.

For EU market access, national‑standard test reports cannot replace EN 15129 type‑test results due to different test factors and hold‑time rules. Manufacturers need full‑scale notified‑body‑accepted type‑test reports for CE marking and Declaration of Performance.
